An Egg Under My Leg… By Christina Carrollton, TX. "Mom, how much longer until we get there?" My sister asked impatiently. "Actually we're here!" Mom replied. Finally after long days of waiting to come to Shone Beach, the time had come to swim, surf, and boat. "Kids, come on; you have to get some sunscreen!" Mom bellowed, but my sister and I were already in the water. As I put my toes in the sand, I remembered our past visits to Shone; we would come to Shone for a weekend getaway, usually. This time was so Dad could teach sis how to swim. Today, I had a great feeling inside of me, telling me that something out-of-the-ordinary was going to happen. "Do you want to help me build a sandcastle?" Mom asked anxiously. Starting to dig, I heard the negative attitude of my sister yelling at Dad. I restarted on my digging, hoping to find something magical, like a lost treasure, or a pearl necklace left by a careless tourist. Crack, I found an egg under my leg. Suddenly, I found a turtle crawling up my leg. "Hey, buddy what are you doing here?" I said as I showed Mom my new pet. Surprisingly, she told me that I couldn't keep it. "Fine, then I'm going to spend the day with Arielle! "Who's 'Arielle' ?" Mom asked. "That's the name of my turtle!" I replied. Mom, just let out a sigh. I took Arielle, out to go swimming, surfing, and even making sandcastles. After swallowing almost a gallon pf saltwater, I decided it was the best time to put Arielle back. After all, we did have a lot of fun with each other. Bending down, in the water I let Arielle loose. First Arielle hesitated, and then waddled away quickly. Standing up I yelled," Good-bye Arielle! I'll miss you!" The Giant Spider By Terran Age 6 Pedder and Giller were six-year-old boys walking alone in the forest. "Look there is a spider web!" said Pedder. "Oh, that is not an ordinary spider web!", said Giller. They looked and saw a giant spider it was four feet tall, black with a red X on his back and big claws! The spider bit them both on their backs! Their Momma came crying and said "What bit you?" "A giant spider bit us! Mommy please carry us!" they said. Mommy said "No, lets go home and you two will have to go into the corner for lying. There is no such thing as a giant spider!" They escaped from the corner. Pedder said 'I'm going to the lab." Giller went with him. The mean lab guy said "Get in this freezer." So Pedder and Giller went into the freezer. Their Momma came and said "where is Pedder and Giller, they are supposed to be in the corner!" Pedder and Giller tried to knock on the window but it was knock proof. Mamma and the lab guy left. The giant spider came walking in a fearsome way, stomp, stomp, claw, claw! The giant spider pulled on the freezer door, he pulled the door right off. Mamma and the lab guy saw Pedder and Giller running very fast. Mamma said "Go home and get back into the corner!" Then she saw the giant spider coming, stomp, stomp, claw, claw! The spider ate Mamma and the lab guy. Then Super T came! He chased the spider who was following the kids. He got the spider with a laser he had from the planet Gogoman. The spider spit out Momma and the lab guy. Super T said "Oh, Momma mia!" The giant spider melted into the ground. He was never to be seen again. It was a Dark and Scary Night… By Julie Age 15 West Seneca, New York It was a dark scary night as the detective was walking down the street. He had just come into town to solve some cases. Nobody was out or around. The streets were quiet. You could only hear the wind blowing through the trees. He started to realize that something wasn’t right. All of the houses were dark and there were no streetlights on. There was no power anywhere. The detective wanted to investigate this more so he said “This looks like a job for the scientific method.” The first step is to define the question. I will ask why did the lights go out? I do not know why so lets move on to the next step. Oh, boy, now we get to gather information! Well, the street is dark and there is a lot of snow and wind. On to the next step. Now I need to state my hypothesis. I think the lights went out because there was a bad storm. We are getting closer to the solution! Next I need to collect data. So I am going from house to house to ask the neighbors. They all said that the storm made the power go out. I also checked all the light switches in the house and it was true. On to the next step. Now I need to analyze my data. If there is lots of snow on the ground, heavy winds, and the neighbors said that the power went out because of the storm then my hypothesis must be correct! An hour later the power went back on and I turned on the T.V. to see if I was right. On the news it talked about the storm and why the power went out. The scientific method always works! Kristi and the Couch By Nick Age 11 Was I mad? Yes. Was I angry? Yes. My battle plan was set in my mind. I started out by making the proper adjustments. First, I pulled the couch foot rest lever. Next, I wanted to be sure that Thanksgiving dinner wasn't going to be ready for a while. Soon, football was on. The team that was playing was the Green Bay Packers (my sister's favorite football team). I still waited for the right moment. Finally, my sister stood behind the couch. This was it! I grabbed my sister's arm and pulled. I pulled so hard my arms almost came out of their sockets. She slid so much her head was on the foot rest. She was on the foot rest. She was in a position so she couldn't get off. She then asked my Grandmother to help her. I prevented her from getting Kristi off the couch. Kristi sat there for about three seconds. She finally managed to slide off the couch. I walked over to where she was. She then tripped me. While I was falling I almost forgot why I did this in the first place and then I remembered. She had teased me. I finally smacked into the ground and was in pain, but it was worth it. Marsha The Bear By Alex Age 11 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania "Here she comes, Marsha the bear!" screamed the little forest animals. When she comes you should WAIT… ...is that how you should really start out a story? No. Let's go back to the beginning. Everyone knew Marsha as "the bear bully", but I knew her as "the sweet big bear". I met her in preschool when I tripped over her foot. I was so scared! I thought she was going to eat a poor little rabbit like me, but instead she picked me up and asked me 'are you ok?' I nodded my head. "Good," she said. At that very moment I started to realize that all bears aren't mean. They can be nice, too! The animals just assume that bears are mean because they have sharp claws and teeth. I always help Marsha when she is in a bad mood. She claws trees and smothers herself in honey. I calm her down. After the years the forest animals got to know the real Marsha, and after awhile all of the animals in our forest became her friend. Acorn's Adventures By Kristy Grade 6 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Hello, my name is Acorn and I'm a squirrel. When I was younger I lived in Ohio with the rest of my family. In our neighborhood there were many families, some nice, some mean. One day my favorite family moved! They brought everything out of their house and put it into a big truck. When they brought out the sofa I found a tear and crawled inside. Soon the truck started moving. When it stopped and people pulled out the sofa, I found out that I was in North Carolina! The truck had traveled a long way! I met some other animals (squirrels and birds), and they were really nice to me. I liked one squirrel, named Bushtail, best. He invited me to stay with him, and I said yes. After that we became really good friends and decided to live together. That spring Bushtail and I had two children, Climber and Jumper. They could be annoying, but we love them. They made some friends and we were happy. The worst thing that happened for a while was that Jumper got inside the house and was trapped! The people found him though, and brought him back outside. We also had some storms that fall and winter, but no one was hurt. In the spring Climber and Jumper were grown up, so they left. Life was a lot more relaxed, but Bushtail and I missed them. After a year we decided that it was to quiet, so now we have a couple of new children. Their names are Walnut and Oak. Got to go now, the kids are calling me, goodbye! Santa's too busy for us??!!! Katie Levittown, New York It was the night of Christmas Eve when mommy said "I think Santa Clause might be a little to busy for us this year". Then I told mommy "mommy? Why would he be too busy for us?" Time for my sleep so I scurried downstairs into the basement. So okay we weren't the most rich people in the world, but for some reason tonight I knew that Santa would make it here just for me, Christie, and my sister Tina but we call her Teeny. That evening I had not eaten dinner because mommy forgot to go shopping, so it might just be my hunger playing tricks on my feelings again. When I woke up that morning I felt lucky but decided to wait for mommy so if there weren't any toys I could lean to her. When mommy woke she came and got me and said "even if there aren't any toys there's still us and the toys of family members to us." At that split second mommy I knew mommy had a point, so now I'm thinking lets go see if there are any presents at all. Then we saw the mountain of toys all the family members had brought. The family all jumped out and mommy said to them "how… where… when..! This is amazing! You guys saved Christmas." Then aunt Miranda said "we came over last night and set out allllll these gifts because when you guys come to my house with the words "I got two new things for Christmas that are my favorite cause they're the only ones I have, it breaks my heart. So this is what our new tradition is from now on!!!" My Blue Mushroom Fairy Tree By Gersandre Age 8 Sparta, New Jersey I have fairies that live in my big backyard. One day, I planted a blue fairy mushroom, and now I have a grown fairy tree. My fairy mushroom attracted fairies from all over the world, including the land down under, Australia. I'm a friend of the fairies because I take good care of them. I feed them berries and give them forsythia cuttings to make a hedge around the fairy tree. One blustery day, the fairy tree broke. So my dad and I planted another blue fairy mushroom into the moist ground. It magically grew in one second. All the fairies played happily together… including me! "Stand back," said the Elephant. "I'm going to laugh!" By Caitlin Age 8 West Palm Beach, Florida "Stand back I'm going to laugh!" cried the elephant. "I don't mean to alarm you because I don't want to harm you. So run away! I'm going to laugh!" "Oh please, don't laugh!" said the tiger. "The last time you laughed my stripes came off and so did my fur. I flew all the way to Madagascar! Oh please don't laugh!" "Oh please don't laugh!" said the giraffe. "The last time you laughed my spots came off, and I ran away. It took me 10 days to come back. Please don't laugh!" "Oh please don't laugh!" said the mouse. "The last time you laughed, I bit a monkey. So it hit me on the head. My head now hurts really badly. So please don't laugh!" "Oh please don't laugh," said the turtle. "The last time you laughed my shell fell into 50 peaces. It took 15 days to put it back together. So please don't laugh!" "Ha, Ha. I fooled you! I was never going to laugh. I only pretended to laugh!" He said with a cute laugh! The animals started to laugh too. Why I Didn't Do My Homework By Ilana Age 11 Beachwood, Ohio As the bell rang, I knew that I was in trouble. While I slid into my seat, I began to think of an excuse for why I didn't do my language arts homework. My excuse would need to be really good and funny if I wanted to keep my "A" average. I hope she'll let me have another day to do my homework. "Good afternoon, class. Please take out your homework. I will come around to collect it," instructed Mrs. Colly. Here goes, I thought. She's coming closer… "Your homework, Ally," demanded the teacher. "I-I-I don't have it," I mumbled. Mrs. Colly sighed. "Why not, Ally? Now this better be good." "Well, see, what had happened was… Okay, do you want the truth?" Mrs. Colly nodded expectantly. "Well, here goes… This morning, as I was walking to school, a mutant pair of scissors attacked me!" Everybody howled with laughter. Mrs. Colly almost laughed, but I could tell that she was trying really hard to look mad. "The scissors had hands, too. It unzipped my backpack, took out my homework, and started snipping. It didn't even let me keep the pieces!" "Then, the evil scissors laughed an evil laugh. Don't ask me how. I didn't open my eyes until the horrible office supplies left. I ran to school as quickly as I could so that he wouldn't come back with his friend, the Stapler. And now I'm here without my homework. THE END," I concluded. All of my classmates doubled-over with the giggles, even Mrs. Colly chuckled! I guess I didn't receive a zero on my homework. Mrs. Colly just handed me a copy of last night's homework and told me to bring it tomorrow! Now what should I do about my science homework… Abbie, the Golden Retriever By Chelsea Age 11 One day in San Francisco, California, there were three stray Golden Retrievers named, Max, Jack, and Abbie. The Animal Rescuers from the Humaine Society went out one day and saw the three dogs near a rusty, old garbage can. So the Animal Rescuers slowly walked toward them, and quickly snatched them. A few days later, when the dogs got their shots, they were up for adoption. People walked by them but didn't seem interested. So after a few months, the Humaine Society put them in a box in front of Market Basket. They were on sale for .50! One guy named Bob said, "Only .50, why not?" So Bob took Jack, and gave him to his niece for her birthday. A little girl named Sally said, "Mommy, can I get a puppy for .50?" Her mom said, ". 50, why not." So Sally bought Max. That left Abbie all alone. No one wanted her. Finally, after a couple of hours, an 80 year old guy named Mike said, " I wanted a dog my whole life, but I've only got .25!" This little girl came up and said, " I made .25 for cleaning my room, but you can have it." So Mike bought Abbie. Abbie had made Mike realize that just because he was poor, doesn't mean he can't have fun. So on the 4th of July, there was a Circus Parade. Mike decided that since he had never been to a Circus Parade, that he would go to this one, and bring Abbie along with him. At the Parade, people were handing out candy. That had been Mike's first piece of food in a few months. He went to give a piece to Abbie, but she wasn't there. She had taken a balloon to the sky, (which she wished that she never did) and popped the Hot Air Balloon that was souring through the sky. 1 Million Dollars fell, and… MIKE CAUGHT IT!!!!! So Mike bought a white house, a navy Blue car, and a bunch of food, (at Market Basket, since that was his lucky place.) And every night, before Mike went to sleep, he would say, "Abbie, you saved my life." A Visit With the King By Anna By 12 Whitefish, Montana Once upon a magical time, in a magical kingdom there lived a cat named Helena. She was the most beautiful cat in the entire kingdom. Because of her beauty she was invited to enjoy lunch with the king. She was so excited she made herself a cup of cocoa and had a party with her dolls. As she sipped at her cocoa she realized she had nothing to wear to lunch. "I will call the tailor and order a dress," she assured herself. The next day the tailor arrived at Helena's home and brought her a beautiful pink gown. She loved it. She thanked the tailor profusely and darted to her room to try it on. Helena was beautiful, but in this dress she looked like a clown. How could a self respecting cat wear an ugly dress like this. Now what would she do? Five hours later the tailor returned with another gown. This one looked like an grandma cat dress. She wanted to look like a stunning young cat. The tailor took it back and tried again. The next morning the tailor arrived with a beautiful purple dress, even more extravagant than the first. She tried on the dress. It was a perfect fit. She looked more splendid than ever. The king's driver came to Helena's villa and brought her to the king's palace. Helena had the best time of her life. They ate delicious fish sandwiches and drank punch. Helena and the king became close friends and visited each other once a week. After several more visits Helena and the king fell in love. Soon Helena became queen of the kingdom. The Magical Piñata By Natalie Age 13 Whitefish, Montana Niki was so excited; it was finally her 10th birthday party. She had the perfect cake, vanilla with vanilla frosting. Her three best friends were with her, Claire, Emily, and Hannah. Also, she had a unicorn piñata! It was filled with goodies like candy, whistles, and much more. When she put the blindfold on she went up to the unicorn. All of a sudden it spoke these words, "Don't hit me!" All the girls were stunned! Then the unicorn added, pushing her rainbow horn in the air, "If you crack me open to get the goodies you won't get you're wishes,". They all looked puzzled. "Oh, don't tell me you don't know that a magical unicorn piñata, which I am, will grant a person four wishes if they never again hit a piñata?" said the unicorn. They were still puzzled. "Well, in fact, it's certainly true." she said. Once they all promised never to hit a piñata again Niki, being the birthday girl, got the four wishes. Since she was so generous, however, she gave a wish to each of her friends. Claire went first and said, "I want a pony!" Poof! She got a pony! Emily wished for a giant teddy bear. Hannah wished for an iPod with all of her favorite songs on it. Then Niki wished for them to be friends forever. Poof! A teddy bear. Poof! An iPod. Poof! You will be friends forever, and then the unicorn disappeared. Years later, while sitting on her pony, Claire hit a piñata at her birthday. Poof! The pony vanished out from under her! That made all the girls realize how important keeping a promise is. They all stayed best friends forever and ever for the rest of their lives! Somewhere Warm By Molly Age 12 Whitefish, Montana On a particularly cold and snowy day in Antarctica, all the penguins were playing in the snow. Everyone was having a great time, except little Joey. Joey was the smallest of all the penguins, and he got cold very easily. He stood there shivering. There must be some way to get to a warmer place, he thought. I'm going to find out how! Joey realized it was getting late and waddled off to bed to read his book about Florida. When Joey awoke the next morning, he found all the penguins running around in confusion. Joey stepped into the chaos, asking everyone what was going on. No one answered. Then he noticed something floating in the ocean close to shore: a ship! It had the words "Sea World Orlando" on it. He'd read about ships, but he had never actually seen one before. A smaller boat with strange-looking creatures in it was heading toward shore. They came from somewhere warm, Joey thought. He excitedly went down to explore. When Joey got there, the creatures were already on shore. While he was trying to figure out why they came here, the creatures took a bucket of fish out of their boat. Joey ventured nearer. They tossed him a fish. I like these creatures already! he thought, as he gulped it down. The creatures stayed for several days. One morning, Joey saw them packing up. He went to the shore with them, where they put their things in the rowboat. Joey hopped into the boat. He wanted to go with them. He was surprised when the creatures let him stay there. Joey jumped up and down! He would never be cold again! Joey waved to all his friends. He was finally going somewhere warm! The Rocking Horse By Hailey Age 12 Whitefish, Montana There once lived a princess named Maria. She had eyes of sapphire, lips of ruby, and long, golden hair, but she was very spoiled. She had no friends because she was bossy. No one had ever loved Maria because she hadn't given anyone a chance. Then one day, everything changed. It was a stormy night, lightning lit up the sky with its electric bolts. A crippled woman hobbled up the cobblestone path to the castle. She pounded on the large wooden doors. The princess answered the door, surprised to see the old woman. "Happy Birthday, young princess." Said the woman. "I came to give you this present." The woman handed Maria a small, black rocking horse and left. Maria was astonished, "I'm fourteen years old and I got a rocking horse?" She walked upstairs sadly and went to bed. During the middle of the night, Maria woke up. A loud neighing filled the room. Maria jumped out of bed to see a large, black horse. "Come with me," said the horse. Maria obeyed and walked toward the horse. The horse kneeled down, gesturing for Maria to climb on. Slowly she climbed on, and the horse walked out of the room. After walking through the castle, the horse made it's way outside. They galloped across the endless grass, the wind blowing through Maria's hair. Maria had never felt such delight before. Soon the stars came out and the horse stopped and tipped over. They fell laughing into the grass and watched the stars. Soon the girl learned to love the horse. They rode back inside before morning. The horse turned back into the rocking horse in the morning. The girl was sad, but she knew that when night comes she would fall in love all over again. The Lion Cubs By Brianna Age 13 Whitefish, MT There was once a pride of lions that lived in the warm and beautiful savannah in Africa. Some of the cubs' names were Mark, Suzy, and Carmon. They were the main trouble makers in the pride. They had a lot of fun doing their crazy things such as riding on the giant elephants. "Let's go explore the forest!" Carmon told his brother and sister. They walked in the unknown part of a rare forest in the savannah to explore. As they walked they jumped out of trees onto each other and on other animals like mice and birds. They laughed and ran around in circles after each other. Suzy ran ahead into a clearing and said, "Guys, come and take a look at this! I found something new and awesome!" They all ran to where Suzy was in the trees. They saw the sight of their lives. It was a giant lake. It was perfect! Mark asked, "Is it safe to swim in the lake?" The daring Carmon climbed up a tree and jumped into the lake. His head finally popped up out of the murky water and he said it was awesome! They had a blast swimming and having fun jumping off the trees into the water. When the sun was beginning to get low in the sky, they worried that every one would be mad at them because they were not to go in the forest. When they went home they told them about the lake. They all went back in the morning with the whole pride and swam all day long. Bill's New Friend By Michael Age 13 Whitefish, Montana Abe Johnson and his wife Bella adopted a two-year-old boy named Bill in 1995. The family lived in upper Manhattan. After eleven years there, the Johnson family decided to move to a more peaceful community, Ruckerville, North Carolina. Late one sunny day in August, the town of Ruckerville received this family of three. Thirteen year old Bill would be attending Ruckerville Middle School. Since the Johnson family had just moved to their new home, they didn't know many people. On September 7th, Bella drove her son to his first day of seventh grade in the new school. It went pretty well, most of his teachers seemed pretty nice, and he thought he was going to get good grades. The only problem was, he couldn't find a friend and he felt lonely. None of the children in his classes seemed to like him or share the same interests as him. After school on the first day, his mother asked, "How do you like your new school, honey?" "I like the school and all of my classes," he answered, "but I haven't made any friends." "Oh, you will give it a week and I'm positive you will at least have one friend," After a week Bill still did not have any friends. Then, one day as Bill was walking down town to school, a cardboard box started to shake and growl! Bill was very curious; he walked over to the box and lifted it. What he found was a puppy! It jumped up into Bill's arms and started licking his face. "I'm going to bring you home," Bill whispered, overjoyed, "I will name you Leroy!" Bella let her son keep Leroy after making sure Bill would take care of him. Bill finally had a new friend. Sebastian By Ally Age 12 Whitefish, MT Sebastian looked up at the sky and sighed. "Typical weather," he said sadly. It was a warm, sunny day, as it usually was in the Galapagos Islands. All of the other tortoises were basking in the glorious rays of the sun. Sebastian was not. He was planted under a bush, and didn't plan on leaving it any time soon, as he loved the shade. Sebastian was a giant tortoise, only about 30 years old. He lived on the Galapagos Islands along with the rest of his family. He was a normal tortoise, except that he hated the sunny, warm weather that took up most of the year in his home. He always wished for rain, though it had only happened a few times in his life. Sebastian just didn't like the sun at all. It was like…a giant fireball of fury. He shuffled slowly along down the path to his house. He was very tired, and he didn't know why. 'Probably the sun,' he thought sourly. Sebastian curled up in his shell, and went to sleep. A few hours later, Sebastian woke up and poked his head out of his shell. It was a dark gray outside, and the clouds were swirling. Rain! Sebastian went outside, and sat in a giant open field. When the first drops hit him, he jumped for joy. He kept jumping, and jumping, and the ground got really wet. Then, he slipped! He fell down and twisted his ankle really badly. The clouds made it so dark that he couldn't see the path back to his house. Sebastian got really worried. A few minutes later, the sun began to peek out behind the clouds. The path was visible again! He realized he maybe didn't like the rain as much as he thought after all. The Big Bad Boy By Kori Age 9 Las Vegas, Nevada Once upon a time there was a kid that was very tall. Why Trees Can't Move… By Elana Age 11 Beachwood, Ohio My old friend Ted once asked…why can't trees move and talk and interact with people? He asked everyone. One day he was about to give up on the questions when he decided to go to a wise old man that lived in the mountains… "Hello young one, what have you come here for?" said the wise one. "Hello I am Ted and I have a question…why cant trees talk and move and interact?" I held my breath waiting for the answer because I never wanted to hear that question again. A couple seconds later, the wise man responded and told us the answer to the question. "Well this starts with an old tale…a long time ago when everything lived in peace, and no wars were happening and everyone was happy, the trees could walk…they could talk…and they could interact with people…new trees were being planted everyday, but one day a very evil man planted a tree. When the tree started to grow it would walk around and make fun of the other trees, but they didn't like it very much, and they thought he should stop, so they went to Mother Nature… "Mother Nature!!! There is a tree that is starting to grow up and is making fun of all of us…some of the other trees are starting to help him!" "Oh my gosh this should be stopped!" Mother Nature explained her plan to the trees that came, they didn't like it, but it would work, so they each picked a place in the forest that they liked and Mother Nature froze them." "She froze them?" asked my old friend "Yes said the wise one, though some people say that sometimes they see trees moving and playing just like before." The Foaming Shoes By Jake Age 11 Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Lucy answered the phone and was so excited to hear her friend saying that he wanted to come to her town and take her on a date. Lucy's friend had never been to her town and Lucy wanted to make their date special. She had one big problem, though, the shoes to her favorite outfit were very dirty and she wanted them to look new. No problem, thought Lucy, she'll just give them a good scrubbing. Lucy scrubbed and scrubbed, but the dirt just wouldn't come out. So Lucy began to add more and more soap as she scrubbed. Finally after scrubbing for what seemed like hours, Lucy held up her shoes and thought that they looked almost brand new. Then Lucy heard a knock at her door. Lucy quickly put on her clean shoes and opened the door. Lucy was so happy when her date told her how nice she looked. Lucy's date took her hand and they began to walk into town. While walking through town it started to rain. Slowly at first, but within minutes it began to pour. Lucy and her date made a run for it. The harder it rained the faster they ran, and that's when it happened. Lucy's shoes began to foam. When Lucy saw her shoes foaming, she realized that she had forgotten to give them a good rinsing. She and her date kept running and her shoes kept foaming and foaming and foaming. When Lucy's date saw her feet covered with foam he began laughing hysterically. Lucy had never been so embarrassed in her life, but her date told her not to worry. He said that it was a date that he would never forget and soon they were both laughing together. The Messy Room By Kristiana Age 10 Naperville, IL Tracy was worried. She knew it was her fault. She had committed a crime: She had lost her little brother Jake. He was actually a good brother, too. They'd simply been retrieving a Chess set from Tracy's room . . . They cautiously stepped inside. Yet they didn't say anything, they both knew it was a total mess. Laundry lay everywhere, with an assortment of graded tests, pencils, even trinkets from McDonalds. Anything that you weren't tightly holding onto went into the mess. Books were scattered about, and her desk was swamped with the same. A computer screen was barely visible through all the post-it notes and homework piled up. Even the remains of a lunch lay on top of the desk. Dust was everywhere. Jake abruptly disappeared into the mess. Tracy jumped back immediately, wondering what to do. Mom was grocery shopping, Dad at work . . . Now, Tracy knew she had to find Jake before her parents got home, or dial 911. Suddenly, she knew what she had been ignoring, but had to be done. Tracy went back into her room and began to work. She sorted laundry, filed papers, threw away junk. She organized objects, and finally discarded the half-eaten lunch. She threw away invalid sticky-notes, and cleared away the dust with a NoDust wipe. Two hours later, she stood proudly in her shiny, clean room. There was no clutter, and her floor was spotless. Suddenly, she head Jake call from under her bed: "Geez, Tracy! I played your and my side of Chess while I was lost, and you won!" The cabin was big, pretty, and nice looking. The curtains had red and yellow flowers and plants all over the place. There was a tree by the lake. The tree was pretty, colorful, and young. Somebody was watching the tree. It was a girl watching the tree! She was nice and funny. She watered the tree and took care of the tree. The next day, the tree got bigger and bigger and bigger and then the tree was humongous! It was not young anymore. The girl couldn't climb the tree because it was so big! One day, the girl did not come back. A few years passed and it got to January and the leaves were gone. The tree turned bigger and fatter and older. He saw the girl that took care of him. The Race By Clara Age 10 Bocas del Toro, Panama I was a torpedo, hurtling down the hill. I had the sensation of flying and I shouted. I had always dreamed of being a snowboarder, and if I won the race tomorrow I would turn pro! I was on the slopes practicing for the big day all the time. Time raced, and my heart beat faster every second. I imagined the race in my mind. The horn would start and I would shoot out into the snow. Weaving in and out of trees, I would make my way to the finish and win first! I was in my gate ready the next day! The horn was blowing! Instead of shooting into the snow as I had imagined I stood without moving. Suddenly I heard a shout, "Go!" I was off, into the race. I was in the lead! Everything was going perfectly until a great shape rose up in front of me. I was swallowed in darkness. It was pitch dark and I seemed to be floating. Suddenly a voice echoed from the darkness, "Hello little one, what are you doing here?" "I-I d-don't know-ow," I stammered. "I never had parents, nor did I have siblings or friends. I'm always lonely. So sorry but you're staying," the "thing" said, "I'm also sorry that I captured you." "Please," I begged, "I need to go home. Couldn't we make a deal or something?" The thing looked thoughtful for a moment then suggested, "I could maybe give you 'thought speech' then release you." I was ready to agree to anything, "Sure." I could hear her words in my head and realized I could talk in my head! Suddenly I was in the race again, except now I was across the finish line. "Whoops," a mischievous voice said in my head. Best Friends Forever By Triana Age: 13 Whitefish, MT Once upon a snowy day, a little bird named Jimmy sat in a tree. He was cold and lost. His toes were numb, and he couldn't feel his wings. "I should have gone south with Joey," he muttered. Jimmy had just moved out of his parent's nest, and when his best friend Joey asked him if he wanted to fly south with him, he said no. "I should've gone south," he thought again. Jimmy started to cry, every tear freezing into miniature icicles of sorrow. Then, a hole in the tree caught his eye. "Maybe it'll be warm in there," he murmured, starting to cheer up. He stumbled over to the hole, and climbed inside stiffly. Cautiously, he looked around, but it was too dark to see. He felt something hit his head. He whirled around trying to see what it was. His eyes adjusted to the dark, and he saw a pile of nuts. He stared at it, confused. The pile started moving, when a furry hand stuck out of it. "Aaahhhh!" Jimmy screamed and started running in circles. He felt something grab his head and lift him off the ground. "What's wrong little fellow," said a deep voice, "I'm sorry if I frightened you. Let me introduce myself. I'm Mr. Billybob, the squirrel. Who are you?" "I'm Jimmy. I just came in here because I thought it would be warm. Do you mind if I stay just until the snow calms down?" "Go ahead," replied Mr. Billybob. Jimmy and Mr. Billybob became best friends. Jimmy stayed for the whole winter. When spring came, Jimmy didn't want to leave, and Billybob didn't want him to, either. They both decided to live with each other forever. It's full of love and war, nah I'm just kidding. It's really about my trials to escape from my boring little bowl. I tried to get into some place new, like the sink where I will get down the drain to freedom. One day, I was swimming around in my bowl doing my normal morning laps for exercise when I realized my bowl was so plain! There was nothing except a castle in the middle, and a few smudges on the outside of the tank. I thought that I HAD to get out of there. So I devised a plan. The second the mother of the human family tried to drain my bowl in the sink to clean it out, I would swim as hard as I could up to the edge of the bowl. Then I would make a huge leap and get out and down the drain. The plan was perfect. Two days later it was time to put my plan into action. The human mother picked up the bowl and started tilting it to get the slimy water out. I swam up the side of the bowl using little dents in the bowl to pull my way along. Then I got up to the edge and gathered up all my strength. I made a huge leap. It was like I was a whale. I was whirling through the air, spinning around and around. I saw my goal right in front of me, the drain. I dodged the human mother's hands just by a few inches!! I heard the mother scream," Oh no," just as I barely slipped through the drain, right into freedom. The only way to stop Dorothy was to get a magical crystal shell and show Dorothy her own reflection. Jennifer decided to take action, so she swam frantically to the top of the blue sea. She poked her head out of the water, and searched for the shell. She saw the shell in the sand out of the corner of her eye and almost screamed because she was so excited!! Jennifer cautiously swam closer to the shore. She stuck her hand out onto the soft sand and snatched it. Jennifer swam back to her town. When she got to the entrance of the castle, she hid the shell in a bag until she got past the scary guards. Jennifer swam to princess Dorothy's room in the tallest tower. No one noticed her, so she went straight up. Just when she got to Dorothy's door, it opened, and there Dorothy was, standing in front of her with an ugly yellow dress on and the look of disgust on her face. "Who are you?" she said with evil in her voice. Jennifer opened her brown bag and stuck the shell in her face. "NOOOOOO!!" Dorothy yelled. Then, she swam as fast as she could out the door, never to be seen again. Momma Manatee Saves the Day By Maggie Age 13 Whitefish, Montana "Merry Manatee Month, Marlie!" yelled my best friend, Larry the sea cucumber, from his cream-colored coral home. My family and I are all manatees, and since it was National Manatee Month, we were all headed to the Royal Manatee Ball. We sped down Current 93 in a sea turtle drawn chariot. The trip was exciting, except for my three brothers Mel, Matt, and Morty who constantly made dolphin noises in the back seat. I gasped, as we turned the corner, the royal palace was dazzling! The front gate was made out of luminous white pearls, there were three towers of purple crystal, and the outer walls were gleaming red coral. King Marvin met us at the breath-taking gateway and led us to our room. Our royal suite was grand, Plasma screen T.V. and all. "Oh no!" I wailed as I started to unpack my bags. I had forgotten my new shoes. " Do not fear, a cobbler's a daughter is here!" yelled my mom from across the room. My grandfather was a cobbler, and had taught her some tricks of his trade. Mom led me outside and found two conch shells. She then carved and polished the shells into ravishing heels. I held my breath while I tried them on, scared that the shoes would not fit. They fit perfectly! I got ready for the ball, putting on my exotic blue Jamaican seaweed dress. I than powdered my nose, curled my hair, and last but not least put on my stunning new shoes. I led the way down to the ball, Mel Mat and Morty right behind me. My parents always liked to be fashionably late. The ball was fantastic. Thanks to mom, my shoes were the talk of my town!
